ADHD ASSESSMENT

Understanding Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It is characterised by persistent difficulties with attention, impulse control, and/or hyperactivity that interfere with daily functioning in school, work, or relationships.

While often associated with childhood, many people are not diagnosed until adulthood.

Why Seek an ADHD Assessment?

Many people with ADHD go undiagnosed for years, often attributing their struggles to stress, anxiety, or personality flaws. A professional assessment can:

  • Provide clarity and validation for lifelong challenges

  • Inform better treatment options (e.g., therapy, coaching, or medication)

  • Improve self-esteem and relationships

  • Support accommodations at work, school, or in exams

Common Symptoms of ADHD

ADHD presents differently for everyone, but common signs include:

Inattention:

  • Difficulty sustaining focus in tasks or conversations

  • Frequent careless mistakes

  • Disorganisation and poor time management

  • Easily distracted or forgetful in daily routines

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity:

  • Restlessness or fidgeting

  • Talking excessively or interrupting others

  • Difficulty waiting for one’s turn

  • Acting without considering consequences

It's important to note that not all individuals will exhibit all symptoms, and symptoms may change with age.

Our ADHD Assessment Process

At Maroubra Psychology, our ADHD assessments are thorough, evidence-based, and tailored to each individual.

  1. Initial Consultation
We begin with an in-depth conversation to understand your concerns, history, and goals. If the assessment is for a child, then this will be with the parents, then the child will also have an initial consultation.

  2. Comprehensive Clinical Interview
We explore your developmental, academic, social, and occupational history. For children, this often includes interviews with parents and/or teachers. You’ll complete psychological questionnaires to assess attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and related conditions such as anxiety or depression. We may include brief cognitive testing to rule out other factors affecting attention or memory. With your permission, we may gather information from school reports, employers, or significant others to better understand your day-to-day functioning.

  3. Diagnosis and Feedback
You’ll receive a clear explanation of the assessment findings, a formal diagnostic report (if criteria are met), and a personalised set of treatment recommendations.

ADHD assessments are conducted by psychologists Aisling Creighton or Miranda Shtein.

What Happens After a Diagnosis?

A diagnosis is not the end—it’s a new beginning. We’ll work with you to develop a management plan which may include:

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for ADHD

  • Medication referrals (if appropriate)

  • Lifestyle strategies and coaching

  • Support for family members or partners

  • Assistance in obtaining academic or workplace accommodations
